Many couples are faced with the difficulty of maintaining a relationship while separated geographically.  This situation is common to those serving in the military, the diplomatic corps, and in academia, among others.  Transitional times are often the most challenging; couples are sometimes surprised to discover that reunions may be equally or more stressful than separations.  Psychotherapy may be helpful for either spouse when they experience:

Feelings of hopelessness or despair

Difficulty coping with the demands of life without the presence of the partner

Parenting challenges related to the separation

Frustration or anger that interferes with the ongoing communication with the absent partner

For couples who have been recently reunited, couples counseling may be helpful under circumstances including:

Ongoing difficulties resolving conflicts

Communication problems

Anger management problems
